An amniotic membrane is used to repair and heal damaged eye surfaces such as severe medical burns, dry eye disease, and many other ocular surface irregularities. The membrane acts as a physical barrier to protect conjunctival and corneal epithelium as it heals, and it reduces pain caused by friction of the eyelids over the surface. In addition, the amniotic membrane promotes epithelial growth through cell migration, adhesion, and differentiation, while also inhibiting cell death.
PROKERA is made by clipping a piece of amniotic membrane tissue in between two rings made out of a clear, flexible material.
BioDOptix is a dehydrated, extracellular membrane tissue that is applied after the ocular surface is completely dry. BioDOptix a flat disc of tissue without a stabilizing outer ring.
PROKERA & BioDOptix are therapeutic lenses are cleared by the FDA to reduce inflammation and simultaneously promote regenerative healing of the ocular surface. Amniotic membranes are harvested in a sterile environment from placental tissue obtained during elective cesarean sections. Donors are screened for transmissible diseases.
